What Chiropractic Patients Want to Know About Bursitis of the Shoulder

July 09, 20233 min read

Bursitis of the shoulder happens when the bursa within the shoulder joint becomes inflamed. The bursa is a fluid-filled sac, and it is there to protect then tendons within the shoulder. Once the area is inflamed and the bursa is painful, there is less room for the tendons to move around. The shoulder joint can’t function normally, and there is pain when trying to move the shoulder.  Chiropractic treatment is a natural option for pain relief and improved mobility when you are trying to heal from shoulder bursitis.

Pain and Inflammation Reduction

When you have bursitis in your shoulder, the pain can be almost unbearable. While you can continue to take prescription medication and see other treatment providers, chiropractic can also be used to try to control your pain and inflammation. With vertebrae out of alignment, your muscles, tendons and ligaments will be strained, causing pain and inflammation. A chiropractor looks at the alignment and determines where you need adjustments to improve the overall function of your body.

Chiropractic Adjustments and Bursitis

Chiropractic adjustments help promote healing of your soft tissue, muscles and tendons. When you have bursitis in your shoulder, proper spinal alignment is important. Your chiropractor will also look at the function of your shoulder joint, and look for ways to improve your range of motion. When your spine is in alignment, this reduces inflammation and improves the function of your nervous system. If your shoulder joint is restricted because of bursitis, it’s time to see how a chiropractor can help.

Working With a Chiropractor

When you meet with a chiropractor for shoulder bursitis, you will go through a medical evaluation to determine what is going on with your shoulder. Your chiropractor will discuss your medical history, complete a physical exam of your spine, and potentially order x-rays to further diagnose the problem. The goal of chiropractic is to help your body heal naturally, while not aggravating your current condition any further. In the early stages of your recovery, you will be scheduled for appointments several times a week. Chiropractic adjustments build upon one another, and your healing is more effective when you commit to seeing a chiropractor regularly in the beginning.

Reducing Your Risk of Further Injury

Your chiropractor works to restore function to your shoulder joint, and will continually look for ways to improve your mobility and strength. You might get hot or cold therapy, learn new stretches, or engage in exercises to strengthen your shoulder muscles. As you heal from your bursitis, your chiropractor will talk to you about strategies that can decrease your potential for sustaining further injury to the area. Good body mechanics and proper spinal alignment can have a big impact on your ability to remain injury free.

Chiropractic treatment is a natural healing modality that helps your body heal itself. With the support of a chiropractor, you can improve joint mobility and reduce inflammation. You will get to the root cause of your pain, and your chiropractor will work to identify ways you can strengthen your body and avoid future injuries. You can heal from shoulder bursitis when you work with a chiropractor and you follow through with all stretches and exercises prescribed.
